Governance

Governance should enable movement, not become another policy layer.

Good governance makes it clear who owns the decisions, how risk is handled and how useful AI work moves forward.

Policy is not the same as governance.

A policy can describe intent. Useful governance makes the practical path clear: who can approve what, who owns the business outcome, when specialist review is required, how exceptions are handled and how decisions are recorded.

Without that clarity, organisations often end up with either uncontrolled experimentation or approval processes that slow everything down.

Governance needs to match the risk.

Not every AI use case carries the same level of consequence. A low-risk productivity use case should not necessarily pass through the same process as AI influencing a material customer, financial, safety or regulatory decision.

Proportionate governance makes it possible to move quickly where the risk is low and apply deeper scrutiny where it matters.

The aim is responsible progress.

The strongest governance models connect ownership, risk, decision-making and value rather than treating governance as a compliance layer sitting outside the work.
